In Class NB children are presented with a series of 'writing missions' which puts purpose and audience at the heart of being a great writer.
Sam lives aboard a notorious pirate ship, The Black Shadow. She’s organizing a Pirate Open Day to recruit new crewmates and asks the Big Writing Agency to help her write descriptions of how pirates should dress. She also needs help with writing a pirate-guide for the new recruits and creating a collection of poems to keep them entertained during the voyage ahead.
Jack has climbed a giant beanstalk and is now in Cloudland! Can the Agents inform the town about his adventures by writing a news report? Jack also needs help with writing instructions for planting magic beans and writing a polite letter to the local farmer, to persuade him to return Jack's cow.
Max has found a silver box containing four mysterious watches. He asks the Big Writing Agents to write some questions about the watches, as well as a set of instructions to help them use their new gadgets. Finally, the Agents are asked to write a tale to make sure Max and his friends use the watches safely.
Kamran and his daughter Avani live in America and are coming to England on holiday. They haven’t been to England before and need some ideas about what to do when they arrive. They ask the children to write descriptions of attractions they should visit. Afterwards, Avani needs their help to write a simple letter of enquiry to help her locate a hat that she lost on a trip to the zoo.
Pictures of children's work will be added as the children progress through the mission and undertake various writing tasks.
This week we have been looking at letter writing. We have learned all of the important elements to formal writing letters including: sender and writers address, the date, formal language, audience, purpose, past tense, capital letters for the start of our sentences and proper nouns, full stops and new vocabulary used for writing letters to people we do not know such as, dear and yours sincerely.
Here is an example of Daniel's fantastic letter.
