In EYFS we use 'Jolly Phonics' to deliver the “Letters and Sounds” curriculum. Phonics is taught every day from Nursery to Reception to all children.
In Years 1 and 2 the children are grouped appropriately in relation to their phonics phase. The children have daily phonic lessons and small sessions within their Literacy lessons. Homework is set weekly.
Children who are struggling are withdrawn for a focused intervention in the afternoon, four times a week using “Rapid Phonics.”
In Year 3 any child still needing phonics teaching takes part in weekly catch-up sessions. This is in addition to a weekly phonic session which is delivered whole class, following the 'Letters and Sounds' curriculum appropriate to their year group. Homework is set weekly.
Spelling - National Curriculum Words
From Years 3-6 all children are taught two new National Curriculum words each week, these are tested at the end of each half term.
In their individual classes the children have spelling workbooks appropriate to their level. These are completed three times a week in the afternoon. The children are grouped by ability.
Spelling is assessed at the beginning of the year to place the children within the scheme and termly assessments inform progress and movement within ability groups.
Spelling lists are sent home weekly for children to learn.
